Careful use of prompting is very important
for those learners who are less likely to show independence. In connection to
this course, handling students with severe and multiple impairments makes use
of prompts because it is one of the only ways to help them respond correctly if
the usual strategies have not worked.
In our video we used verbal and gestural
prompts. If you can notice, our child’s performance is already in the higher
level. As a principle in using prompts always start with the least intrusive.
Since our child already has the prerequisite skills of grasping and identifying
colors, all she has to do is sort it to the appropriate box. So, less prompts
are needed but of course with matching praises.
I have learned in this activity and
from the reporter that prompting is something that we add to help a student
respond correctly. And, it is also something we do not always want to provide
for the learner to be successful. Let’s
put in mind that one of the goals of prompting is independence. If the prompt
will not be removed, which is the process of fading, then the strategy is not
prompting instead it is an adaptation or a modification.
